Common questions about gold and silver prices

What does karat mean?

Karat measures how much pure gold is in a piece, out of 24 parts. 24K is pure gold; 21K contains 21 parts gold out of 24 (87.5%); 18K contains 75%. The higher the karat, the higher the price per gram.

Why is the shop price different from the price here?

The prices on this page are the value of the metal alone, based on the international spot price. A shop price also includes making charges for the craftsmanship, 15% VAT on jewellery in Saudi Arabia and the trader's premium. Use the calculator on this page to estimate the full price of a piece.

How often are prices updated?

While the page is open it checks for new prices every 60 seconds. International spot prices move continuously on trading days and stay roughly flat while global markets are closed at the weekend, from the early hours of Saturday until the early hours of Monday, Riyadh time.

Where do these prices come from?

From Thaheeb's market data service, which tracks international spot prices for gold and silver in US dollars per troy ounce. Ounce prices are shown in US dollars, as the global market quotes them; gram and kilogram prices are converted to Saudi riyals at the fixed official rate of 3.75 riyals to the dollar. Prices are indicative and are not an offer to buy or sell.

How is the 21K gold price calculated?

The 21K price per gram is the 24K price per gram multiplied by 21/24 (0.875). 21K is the most traded karat in Saudi Arabia, which is why it is highlighted in the table.

Prices are indicative market prices for pure metal. Ounce prices are in US dollars; gram and kilogram prices are converted to Saudi riyals at the fixed rate of 3.75 riyals to the dollar. They exclude making charges, VAT and trader premiums, and are not an offer to buy or sell.
